That Day We Went To Training Camp

August is here, everybody.

And with August comes not only beautiful weather and upcoming fall fashions and new goals for the last stretch of the year…but also football season. And I’ll be honest with you. I’m much more fond of futbol than football, but I’m married to a man who loves football. And not only does he love football but he loves Minnesota football. Viking football. No matter how wonderful or terrible the team may be. His loyalty runs deep, and he often tells me that he bleeds purple and gold {a horrifying way to express one’s loyalty, if ya ask me}. Which can be, depending on the team and the season, either a burden or a blessing.

So this year, because I’ve been gaining a bit more knowledge about the game and the players and the whole cult realm that is “football,” we decided to trip down to Mankato, Minnesota and spend the day watching the team practice, eating junk food, maybe snagging a few autographs, and certainly getting sun burnt {with Darebear, it’s inevitable…just another burden he bears}.

It is such a funny experience meeting the players. Part of me is star struck {I mean, they are on television every Sunday}, part of me is laughing at the part of me that’s star struck {geeez louise, it’s just a game}, and another part of me cannot get over how big these guys are {HELLO MUSCLES….AND/OR FAT.}.  Seriously, how many eggs do they eat? Or maybe it’s more appropriate to evaluate how many cartons they consume? Rather than individual eggs? Perhaps by the chicken? GOOD. NIGHT.

What surprised me most was the atmosphere of training camp. The unspoken loyalty and camaraderie that seemed to breathe throughout the grounds. And yes, that sounds like I’ve gone completely insane {you may close your computers now, if you’d like}, but there is this excitement and hope for the upcoming season. Granted, the team we were all there to cheer for was a Minnesota team, and Minnesota teams tend to inspire and build hope within their fans only to have that hope dashed and hearts broken at the end of another disappointing season {such is our burden as loyal Minnesotans}. But what an exhilarating excitement it is! To support, encourage, cheer, hope, and plan for the upcoming year! No matter the obstacles that may lie ahead! Who knew training camp was littered with such inspirational motifs?! Maybe someone should make a movie about sports and motivation and having a positive vision for the future…{oh right, that’s every sports movie ever made…EVER}.

Maybe that’s why training camp is held in August. Whenever August rolls around, I’m always encouraged to make new goals before the end of the year. To “prepare” myself for the fall {and the Minnesota winter, but it’s too early to talk about winter….pretend I didn’t mention it…this conversation never happened…} and for everything the changing of the seasons will bring. I may still be stuck on an academic clock, but August seems like a time of new beginnings. A time to wipe off the sweat from July and slow down just a bit before I have to start bundling up in the fall.

Yes, football is just a game, but the preparation and excitement riddled within the game goes beyond the game…and let me tell ya, I love August and this time of preparation. Darrin and I will both be starting a new season of grad school this fall, and there’s nothing like resting in the unknown, taking a little breather, to make the unknown a bit less scary.

VikingsHow’s that for a rambling post?! I wish all your state’s football teams luck {yes….even you, Packer fans}, and I hope August treats you all well! If you’re looking for a football team to cheer for this fall, might I suggest the Minnesota Vikings? I mean, aside from having the MVP of the NFL {Number 28 behind us}, purple are gold is most certainly a fun combination to have in your wardrobe. 😉

Have a beautiful Thursday!

Hi Grace! I just stumbled upon your blog. Sounds like training camp was great! We (Seahawks) had hopes for Percy Harvin that we got from you guys, but he’s already injured. Lame. I actually just drove through Minnesota this past week on a LONG roadtrip…it seems like a pretty cool place to live.

Oh I love the Seahawks (Don’t tell Darrin :))! I heard Harvin was injured! Crazy! Yes, that is quite the trip from Washington out to the Midwest! Darrin and I drove that for our honeymoon (we went to Seattle) in one night! I love the Northwest! But I’ll tell ya, MN is a lovely place to live. 🙂

Looks like so much fun! Too bad we don’t live closer to our favorite football team. My bf would have loved this.
