Part One of the Beekman Christmas week! Here goes:

Last week, we traveled to the Iowa farm for a few days and celebrated Christmas Eve with Darrin’s side of the family. It was freezing and windy and dry but also quiet and cozy and peaceful. I think I’ve mastered the basic knitting technique, so the majority of our time was spent playing card games, knitting scarves, or {in Darrin’s case} geeking out and reading some Batman comic books. When in Iowa, I guess.

Darrin and I always make sure we stop at two places when we visit the farm: the Kalona Cheese House and String Town Grocery. Kalona makes the best cheese curds. The “squeak in your mouth” kind of cheese curds. We always leave Kalona with a 2 pound bag of cheese curds for the long drive home, and I’m not ashamed to admit that we usually arrive home with an empty bag. String Town Grocery is a small grocery store managed by the Amish. They sell an incredible supply of homemade goods and mixes and soup powders and grains and candies and anything else you might need for meals. We came home with a package of homemade tomato basil noodles, dried mangos, and broccoli cheddar soup powder. Dinner this week? Solved.

Cows were strange animals that smelled at the state fair, and sheep were those fluffy creatures that I would count before falling asleep. I now have such a respect and appreciation for farmers and families that farm. What a tough and exhausting job! But what they say about a farmer and his/her connection to the earth around them is true and incredible. And who wouldn’t love seeing a sunset like that every night?!

Darrin and I traveled back home to Minnesota early Christmas morning. We thought we’d try to make the 6 hour car ride a bit more “Christmas-y,” so we downloaded a virtual Christmas tree and blasted the classic holiday tunes and choir hymns. Who says Christmas has to be in a home? I was feeling the holiday spirit in our little Corolla, cruising down the highway holding my husband’s hand. icon smile Christmas 2013 Part One: Iowa

In case you were wondering, we made it back in time for my family’s Christmas dinner! Pictures of that to come!

I hope you have an awesome New Year’s Eve! Thanks for reading!

what lovely pictures, and your stories remind me so much of my own adventures with jon’s family on the farm. i’d never even seen a barn before we started dating, and when he drove me to meet his family for the first time (from chicago to the northwoods of wisconsin) my head spun with all the storybook pictures of cows and tractors and sunflowers (it was august) that filled the countryside :)
