Darrin and I haven’t been drinking a lot of soda lately. Not because we’re on a health kick. Mostly because carrying a twelve-pack of Diet Coke up four flights of stairs while balancing a few other heavy grocery bags always seems a bit too daunting for us both. Yes, we’ve had that “just take two trips!” conversation. But we’ve decided that we’re an “all or nothing” kind of couple when it comes to carrying groceries. None of this “two trips” nonsense.
But when we do opt to bring home a pack of soda, I’m always requesting a pack of Diet Coke, especially during the summer months. Minneapolis cranked up her summertime heat to 90+ degrees yesterday, and I found myself craving a cold Diet Coke all day long. Funny how certain foods can trigger certain memories. My sisters and I used to sip Diet Coke while we sat outside on our deck, painting our nails and eating watermelon. We’d pack a Diet Coke for our picnics at the zoo, or we’d agree to share a Diet Coke whenever we ordered at a restaurant. A cold Diet Coke on a hot day in June was a sign to my middle-school self that summer had arrived. And summer didn’t care about those crazy artificial sweeteners.
What about you? Have any memory-triggering drinks or foods of your own? Stay cool out there, Minneapolis!
