In Which Pregnancy Screws With My Tastebuds

Sometimes Gracefully Maternity-5 Sometimes Gracefully Maternity-4 Sometimes Gracefully Maternity-3 Sometimes Gracefully Maternity-2 Sometimes Gracefully Maternity-1

I’m at that stage in my pregnancy where my baby bump looks less like a bump and more like I just spent the entire afternoon eating my way through an entire bag of Doritos. And while I’ll confess that I may have spent yesterday’s lunch hour doing just that, I am ready for this “baby bulge” to look a bit more like an actual bump. We’ll get there, friends….one big bag of Doritos at a time…

Turns out everything they say about pregnancy screwing with your eating habits is true (go ahead, all you rockin’ mommas out there. give this newbie a big old, well-DUH eye roll. i deserve it)! A week or two before I discovered that I was pregnant, Darrin and I decided that we were going to adopt a much healthier eating regiment. We cleaned out our cupboards and our fridge, ridding ourselves of anything high in sugars, trans fats, carbs, and anything else that arguably brings humanity joy. Then we took to the grocery store with our list of healthy foods and restocked our kitchen with vegetables, lean meats, protein shakes, and quinoa. I was even preparing myself to “like” kale.

Two weeks later, after taking about five pregnancy tests before I was convinced that I was actually pregnant, every healthy thing that we had purchased in our kitchen made me want to hurl. Especially the quinoa. I’m not sure why, but I can hardly type the word without feeling nauseous. And now, while we grocery shop, Darrin just loves to teasingly point out where the you-know-what is located, just to see my face turn green.

Ahhh pregnancy. Bringing us together in ways we never thought possible. Or more stomach-churning.

So, we had to clear out our fridge and cupboards once more. This time stocking up on fruit (SO much fruit!) and cereal and Goldfish and Doritos. And poor Darrin, throughout the first trimester, willingly ate Cheerios for dinner with me nearly every night of the week because even the smell of certain foods cooking was just too much for Baby Beekman to handle.

Since then, my tastebuds have gradually reemerged, and I think we’ll be grilling for dinner tonight. I’m still staying clear of the you-know-what. And Mexican food. But bring on the fruit trays and bags of Doritos! Nothing quite says pregnancy like a plate full of chips and fruit…along with a jar of dill pickles….

**P.S. Thank you so so much for your sweet words and for sharing in our excitement after last weekend’s post. We cannot wait for this little one to arrive!**

I’m so excited to hear more from you – I was more of just a reader before, but I realized once you were on your hiatus how much I missed your quirky posts! I feel like I’m going to have a lot of the “well duh” moments when the time comes for me to carry a baby; you always hear it, but I guess it is different once you are experiencing it first hand! =)

Thanks so so much! For your kind words and for following along! It makes me so happy to hear that other people enjoy reading the blog as much as I enjoy keeping it up. And I feel like I’ve had SO many “well duh” moments already! Like, I almost forgot to add a baby crib to our list of what baby will need. I guess babies need cribs? Haha so many face palms.

[…] already told you about how this pregnancy has screwed with my taste buds, but imagine my picky-eater astonishment (and Darrin’s) when I ordered the grilled lemon chicken […]
