The Minnesota State Fair!

The most wonderful time of the year has arrived. Where almost every food imaginable is on a stick. Where close to 170 baby animals are born during the 12 day event. Where almost 500,000 corn dogs are consumed on average. Where young girls’ faces are sculpted in blocks of butter. Where the famous F. Scott Fitzgerald was inspired to write “A Night at the Fair” in 1928. Where the beaming sun will both encourage and weaken your desire to move on to the next booth. Where visitors can sip a cold one at the “Beer Gardens” or enjoy an all-you-can-drink milk for $1. I could go on and on and on and on..but I’ll try to narrow in on our little trip. πŸ™‚

We walked through the gates around 8:30am, and most of my family began their State Fair adventure with a Pronto Pup {more commonly known as a corn dog} dunked in either ketchup or mustard.

That decision was a bit too wild for me…I’m not a corn dog fan, but itΒ isΒ the Great Minnesota Get-Together, so I began my day with some kettle corn.Β Really goodΒ kettle corn. It had the perfect ratio of saltiness and sweetness lightly coated on each kernel.Β Amazing.Β Only at the fair.

Spending the day at the fair is definitely a family tradition, and we usually end up going on the hottest and busiest day of the fair {not by choice, I might add}. But this year was incredibly beautiful. No humidity {sayΒ whaaaat?!}, sunny, very few crowds {yes, you read that right}, and fresh food {opening day, baby!}. I was one happy camper. And this year I avoided all awkward and painful contact with the people I call “stroller speedsters”…people who believe that they own the sidewalk simply because the have a stroller. And not just a little, normal-sized stroller. Oh no, that would be too courteous towards others around them. No, they decide to bring their monstrous stroller to the fair. A miniature playhouse on wheels. And let me tell you, I’ve received enough cuts and bruises to the back of my ankles to know that these “stroller speedsters” mean business. If you do not part to one side of the sidewalk quicker than the seas parted for good ol’ Moses, these moms {mostly moms} will snap their fingers, heave a forced sigh, and nudge you along with their weapon on wheels.

All right. I may be exaggerating. I’ll probably end up as one of those moms once we start having kids. We’ll see. πŸ˜‰

My favorite food to order at the fair is the corn. And there may be other booths around the fair that serve “sweet corn,” but the truly good stuff is from the big, green Corn Roast booth. Dunked in butter and sprinkled with salt and pepper. So. Divine.

There is so much to see, eat, watch, and listen to. When the sun became a little unbearable for my fair-skinned husband, we sat beneath the shade of a few trees and listened to a local jazz band play in the nearby band shell. I don’t know about you all, but I love free stuff. Free food samples while grocery shopping makes the day so much brighter, right?! So at the fair, in the education building, I try to stock up on my pencils and pens and magnets for the upcoming school year. Each school booth is so eager to hand out free fake tatoos, pencils, cloth bags, magnets, pens, erasers, and tootsie rolls that it would be such a disservice to pass up on all that free stuff!

I know. I have a problem.

Minnesota State Fair Minnesota State Fair Minnesota State Fair Minnesota State FairIt was such a marvelous day, and we get to comeΒ backΒ next week because Darrin received some free tickets through work! Talk about a good end to summer! Bring on the food! πŸ˜‰

Also, I really wanted to take home that Boston Terrier. Darebear wants “a dog with a snout.” We’ll see…

I hope you’re all having an awesome day! Anyone else love the fair as much as I do?? Has anyone tried any weird foods? Much love!

Thank you! Yes, the milk can sometimes be a bad option when the heat is blasting down on ya…I opt for the lemonade in that case. πŸ˜‰
