Meet Surly Brewing Co.

Surly 6 Surly 7

Darrin and I did all that we could to avoid becoming Those People when it came to beer. I’m sure you’re well aware of Those People. Those People who snub their noses at beer that looks (and sometimes tastes) as clear as water. Those People who choose to savor rather than chug. Who know (what they like to call) the “art” of “crafting” (rather that brewing) beer. Who like to taste the hops glide between their teeth. Some will even sniff their beer before they take their initial sip, hoping that the hoppy aromas will waft through the air and prepare them for the taste that is to come.

Those People.

Beer snobs.

We tried really hard to avoid becoming beer snobs. But then we became IPA beer drinkers. Which slowly transformed our taste buds into semi-beer snobs. The beer snobs who don’t want to admit that they might, in fact, be beer snobs. But now that I’ve confessed, I admit that I feel much better about my beer-snobbishness.

But anyways.

We took our beer-snobby selves to the new Surly Brewery in Minneapolis the other night, and we were blown away by the sheer size of the place. Surly has a large (and impressively crowded) dining area on the first floor; a fancier, private dining area on the second floor; a beautifully designed bar area, a gift shop; an outdoor dining area; and a large, open space riddled with picnic tables, cocktail tables, lawn chairs, and a tiny outdoor bar for those waiting to be seated. Darrin and I ordered our favorite Surly beer, Surly Todd the Axeman (cue angelic “Ahs”) and leaned over a cocktail table while we waited for our seat in the dining room.

At one point during our wait, one small child apparently did not take a liking to me leaning on the cocktail table. He ran/waddled over to me and gave me a good shove with his chubby hands. I looked down into his blue eyes and asked “Oh! Are we playing a game?” To which he responded with a serious face “No,” leaving things a bit awkward for the both of us before he ran to find his mother.

Darrin laughed. I struggled to determine what I did to deserve such a shove. And the little punk abandoned us both without explanation. Moral of the story? You never know what might happen if you visit Surly Brewery. Perhaps the little guy sensed my beer-snobbishness and decided to take action. If that’s the case, I guess I can’t blame him.

Sure, the wait was long and the place was crowded on a Wednesday night, but we didn’t mind. We grabbed our beers, started a tab, and then wandered through the gift shop and around the lawn area until our name was called. If you’re planning on dining at Surly Brewery, I highly recommend ordering the Hog Frites to share. Followed by the Surly Burger. Praise the good Lord for great bar food.

You can browse the Surly website here! And check out their unique list of beers! Like I said, Todd the Axeman is our favorite, but we also liked Overrated as well. They’ve got such a great variety of beers on tap, whether you’re a beer snob, a semi-beer snob, or snob-free. Guess we’ll have to go back and try to (slowly) make our way through the list!

I’m all about “beverage for the situation” if I’m at a small town bar, I don’t complain that its on the watery beers available. But if I’m buying for myself I definitely buy something that’s new and different. I keep waiting for surly to be “not so busy” but it isn’t happening, so I’ll just have to bite the bullet and prepare for the crowds!

I am a total beer snob. Thankfully Maine has a ton of micro-breweries, many of them are just five or ten minutes away from me!
