Darrin and I ventured to Psycho Suzi’s the other night for a date along the Mississippi, and I’ve got to confess that this place might be one of my favorite spots in Northeast Minneapolis. Psycho Suzi’s is an updated tiki bar, a hot-spot for the tattooed, a party destination, and the perfect happy hour haven for fruity/boozy drinks accompanied by a whole lot of tater tots. If you were to blend together a motorcycle bar with a few grass skirts and a tiki hut, you’d come pretty close to discovering Psycho Suzi’s formula for one rockin’ restaurant. While I’m a major fan of their festive and kitschy indoor seating, I love their riverfront patio, so Darebear and I parked ourselves at the bar while we waited for our table along the Mississippi. The sun was setting, the tiki music was blasting, and our fingers were tater tot greasy. Talk about an awesome Saturday night.

We shared a few appetizers during our time on the patio. Like I mentioned before, their tater tots are rockin, along with their fried asparagus spears {pictured above} and the barracuda wings. However, if you’re heading to Psycho Suzi’s for dinner, you must order a pizza, or the tiki gods will haunt you after you pay your bill. Darrin always votes for the Surly Sausage and Triple Mushroom pizza, and I’m a major fan of the The Fastback , but there are way too many clever topping combinations to choose just one. So I suppose I’m recommending that you order two or three pizzas, split them with two or three people, and then leave the tiki lounge completely stuffed and ready to burst.

Tip: Wear yoga pants to dinner. Helps with that whole “stomach expanding” thing.

But anyways, for all you alcohol connoisseurs, let’s talk about the drink menu. Psycho Suzi’s has plenty of tap beers and a great wine selection, but if you’re going to order a drink with your meal, you’ve got to try a tiki drink. Each drink is served in an incredibly tacky but terribly festive tiki head mug, which you can purchase for five extra bucks if you’re feeling the need for a souvenir. Darrin is definitely a beer guy, so most of the tiki drinks don’t appeal to him. I, on the other hand, like to get into the tacky-tiki spirit of Psycho Suzi’s…so bring on the tiki heads!

I love restaurants that create a particular kind of “dining atmosphere,” and the Psycho Suzi’s tiki bar is such a great place to relax after a long week. Sit along the river during the later afternoon and watch the sun set, or head to Psycho Suzi’s late at night when they light the tiki torches! Just remember…do yourself a favor and order some tater tots. 🙂
