If you look closely—really, REALLY closely (I know they’re small)—you’ll probably spot the coffee stains that I oh-so-gracefully spilled on the corner this sweater yesterday morning. Darrin and I have tried our darnedest to avoid receiving a leaky to-go cup lid whenever we stop for coffee. You know, the lids that somehow manage to silently drip coffee on your Sunday best without you noticing until you, after a half hour of Good morning!s and So good to see you!s, spot the stains later in the bathroom mirror. Most of the time, poor Darrin is the lucky winner of the leaky lid. Other times it’ll be me. And sometimes we’ll both walk into church with coffee stains drying on our shirts, which is just simply not what I had in mind when I suggested that our Sunday morning outfits coordinated, ya know?
Darrin and I even had ourselves a “leaky-lid” kind of week last week. Our seasonal allergies decided to descend upon our tiny apartment with a vengeance, and before we knew it, we were nursing scratchy throats, treating congested headaches, and thanking the good Lord for the brilliant individual who invented tissues with lotion (cue angelic “ahhhhh!”).
But when life gives you a leaky-lid, you’ve just got to make do sometimes. Like choosing to spend your “sick-cation” watching a whole lot of Scrubs with your husband rather than worrying about your long to-do list. Or rinsing your Sunday sweater in the bathroom sink before holding it beneath the hand-dryer for 4-5 minutes.
So Caribou Coffee. Thanks for the leaky lid, the character building moment, and for the metaphor. But next time I think I’ll just bring my own to-go mug, thank you very much.
