Darrin and I spent some time visiting family in Iowa over the holiday weekend. There were homemade pies, yard volleyball games, starry nights, and a whole lot of red, white, and blue in honor of the 4th. Whenever we visit the Iowa farm, I love waking up early with Darrin and sharing a pot of coffee with his grandparents. His grandma spoils us with her famous breakfast eggs while we talk with his grandpa about our busy schedules back home in Minneapolis. As the morning progresses, Darrin’s sweet cousins will wander from their house next-door into his grandma’s kitchen. We’ll talk about the new baby lambs that have made their farm debut and then plan out our schedule for the day. I love these trips to Iowa. I love the family, the change of pace, and that comforting sense of feeling “at home” even though you’re “away.” Plus, they’ve got baby lambs, you guys.

LAMBS. Baby sheep that will follow you around like little puppies. I asked Darrin if we could bring one home to Minneapolis, and he told me that the dogs at our neighborhood dog park probably wouldn’t like having a lamb around. I, on the other hand, am sure they wouldn’t mind….

We wrapped ourselves in blankets and sweatshirts and sat together on a set of bleachers for the local fireworks show. We were so close to the fireworks that we had to crane our necks to see them explode across the sky. There was a local radio truck that blasted patriotic songs from the 1950s as the fireworks were lit, and we all made the typical “Oooo! Ahhh! Look at that one!” exclamations. There was one firework that I’m pretty sure was supposed to look like a heart in the sky. Unfortunately, that one looked a bit more like a patriotic potato…but other than that, the show was awesome {ya win some, ya lose some, ya know? 😉 }. And sitting close to my husband, bundled in a fleece sweatshirt while pretty lights riddled the sky above us was definitely awesome too.

Our trip to the farm was just what we needed. Lots of love, family, food, laughter, and baby lambs. We’ll let Alexander the Lamb take us outta here.
