Fighting Illness With Fire. Literally.

Well, it’s here folks. The dreaded Autumn Cold has crossed our little Minneapolis threshold and has chosen Darrin and his first victim. Talk about a bummer way to start the week. He’s got a stuffy nose, a sore throat, and a deep voice that he happily uses to sing “Bad to the Bone” around the apartment. I left the room to grab him a bottle of medicine and came back to find him covered in a mound of Kleenex tissues. Poor guy. There’s nothing like a good head cold to start off the autumn season.

In other news, the house reeks smells like an apple spice pumpkin due to the massive candle I bought yesterday from Target. Darrin’s sickness has got the apartment smelling a bit like Vicks vapor rub and, well, illness, so I thought I’d combat that dreary scent with a monster-sized, double-wicked candle. High fives to Target for having a rockin’ selection. I’ll admit that I smelled no less than 7 different candles with my cart parked in the middle of the aisle. Even candles that I wouldn’t dream of buying {“Desert Cactus,” anyone? “Marine Musk”? What even is that?}. But hey! I’m in the candle aisle! That darn aisle triggers something in my brain that commands me to smell at least 5 different candles, one of which is always “Cupcake” or “Vanilla Frosting.” I love that scent! Even though it smells like a 5 year old’s birthday party. I just adopt a YOLO attitude and buy it anyways. When it comes to candles, you “do what you gotta do.” Or, more accurately, you burn what you gotta burn.

For now though, I’ve got my cozy pumpkin candle burning in our living room and making the entire apartment smell like a pumpkin pie is baking in the oven. Maybe the smell will reach our neighbors and they’ll start believing that I’m one rockin’ pumpkin pie chef. One with an inability to make toast without burning the bread can only hope. Also, let’s take a brief moment to hope that I don’t burn down our apartment complex with my obnoxious candle lighting. Yes? Yes. Cue Darrin from the other room, nodding his stuffy head while blowing his nose.

Happy first day of autumn, I guess!

What about you? Have any favorite candle scents of your own? Also, my motto this fall is “Put A Sweater Over It.” Got an old dress? Put a sweater over it. Don’t want to wear a jacket? Put a sweater over it. Want to see your dog run in circles? Put a sweater over it.  Feel free to adopt my new motto as your own! 🙂
