The Cool Factor

I bought this old, red leather jacket back in high school from a nearby thrift store thinking, at the time, that the red + faux leather combo would make me look much cooler than I actually was. Leather jackets have a certain “cool factor” that you can’t quite recreate with a noisy windbreaker. But this was way back when I was worrying about passing my driver’s license test, listening to Destiny’s Child, and pining for a certain redheaded boy who I knew I’d marry once I figured out some non-embarrassing way to introduce myself. The good ol’ days.

The other night, Darrin told me that I should write a post about my favorite box of Valentine’s Day cards that I had distributed as a kid. You know, the boxes of Looney Tunes or Disney Princess Valentines that were first folded, taped over a chocolate candy, and then dropped into some cardboard mailbox of my fellow kindergarten classmate. “Batman Valentines were the coolest,” he said. Of course, the Lion King Valentines were my personal favorite {DUH}. But aside from those images of Simba or Pumba surrounded by hearts, I don’t remember too much of my kindergarten or first grade Valentine’s Day parties. I do, however, remember a certain red headed high school boy asking me to prom on Valentine’s Day. Two happy years in a row. And I’ve got an old shoe box filled with homemade Valentine’s Day cards all written by a certain 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, etc. year old Darrin. I’m thinking that I may just pull out a few of those old cards this Saturday and read the messages teenager Darrin thought were important to write to his high school sweetheart. Valentine’s Day might as well be about celebrating those moments that you love, as well as the people.

Have any fun Valentine’s Day plans of your own? We may be spending our evening pretending to do research but really watching Hulu all night, which is about as romantic as you can get on a graduate student budget. 😉

Have a great rest of your day!
