To Alhambra With Our Pale Midwest Faces.

Darrin and I took a quick trip over the weekend to Alhambra, California for an academic conference, and I was a complete idiot and forgot to adjust our camera settings from “Tungsten” mode backΒ to “Auto” mode, so that’s why the city looks like it’s immersed under water. Gotta love that Tungsten blue tint, right? πŸ˜‰

According to the woman standing in line in front of me at the airport restroom {long lines + women = awkward bathroom small-talk}, Darrin and I arrived in Cali just in time for the heat wave to die down. I told her that I wouldn’t have minded a little sunshine and humidity, what with Minnesota being colder rather than warmer throughout the year. She then looked at my pale, Midwest arms and faceΒ and said, “Oh yeah you’re definitely going to want to tan a little bit, huh?”.

….

Thanks lady, but have you seen my fair-skinned hubby? And you think I need a tan?!

Don’t worry. I’m not bitter. Let’s just get your act together, Minnesota summer!

Anyways, the conference we attended at CSULA was awesome, and Darrin has finally convinced me that I didn’t read my paper too quickly or make awkward gestures orΒ sound like I had a slight lisp, so that’s also some good news. It was so inspiring to listen to other graduate students and scholars present the research they’ve been conducting or discuss the scholarship they’re hoping to contribute to their field. I always leave these academic conferences with long lists of things that I just want to learn, so now I’ve got a couple more books to read over the summer that range from 18th century history to more modern novels of dystopia {I’m looking at you, Ayn Rand}. All I’m missing is a sunny day and a spot by the lake! πŸ™‚

Have you started planning any summer goals or your own? Who else is ready for the Midwest to heat up a bit?!

Thanks for reading!

the photos look artistic — like an instagram filter πŸ™‚ and you always talk about your conference, but never what you’re writing or presenting – would love to know πŸ™‚ and is that a standford brut? named after the school? how fancy!
